Ice cold Elk River
After a long winter we are finally back running one of our favorite local runs. We opted to leave the creekers at home and bring out some play boats to take advantage of some lower flows on the “Middle” section of the Elk River, BC.
Typically this is a class 4 4+ run in spring but with cold temps and continued snowfall high in the mountains, this section continues to flow at a low level. Stoked to get on the water for the first time since January we began the first 2011 run of the “Middle” Elk River. Since it was the first run of 2011 we were a little cautions of ice around blind corners specifically “Corner Pocket”. The only real concern of ice was just above “Rocket Eddy” where the normal sneak line was blocked solid with ice. There are still two lines to river left of this so we easily continued our paddle without having to get out and portage. The rest of the “Middle” was ice free and provided us with some fun boofs and surf. With any luck we will see more release form BC Hydro and will be into our Creekers and hucking our favorite “Leap of Faith” soon.
